Conceptualizing a Design

Herbert Simon once said that designing is not only for professionals. Humans have been designing for thousands of years and the skills of designers can be found in our everyday lives. Herbert Simon is right; designing is a fundamental human activity. From the construction of stone walls and the construction of a house to the creation of furniture, we engage in design in every activity. The process of designing a building begins by conceptualizing your idea. If you have an idea and plan, the next step is to create it.

“To create design” is to plan, prepare, or prepare a preliminary sketch. The purpose of a design is to determine its form, structure, or function. It is a sketch or plan for a specific purpose. There are also several other senses of the word, as a noun and verb. Let’s explore them below. This process is often called product design. Design is the process of creating something that will benefit people in a particular way.

To conceptualize a design, you should begin by brainstorming and thinking about ideas. These ideas should be derived from a stated design problem or product idea. However, sometimes a product idea will come from an unstated need or desire. In this chapter, we discuss the basic tools for conceptualizing designs, such as brainstorming and creativity tools. We will also discuss the concept of a design and how to make the final decision about it.

Depending on the project, conceptualization can be done alone or with a team. Alternatively, it can be done in writing. Most designers prefer visual ideation, so they might find it easier to visualize the project through basic sketches. In such cases, the process is known as iterative, since it allows the team to spend more time on ideation and produce a more complete design solution. Conceptual design is a critical first step in the creative process.

Before you begin the process of designing, it is important to identify the project owner’s needs and desires and determine what would be most useful. A design that lacks a core idea is likely to fail. A good conceptual idea, however, is the foundation of any good design. Even the best technical designer will fail to create a successful product without a strong concept. And if the concept can’t be achieved, the design will likely be rejected.
