Are you planning a trip to Sri Lanka? Are you wondering about the best time of year to visit? Here are some tips for traveling to Sri Lanka during the spring season:
Colombo
The average Colombo spring weather varies by season, but there are some key characteristics to look for. The percentage of cloudy days increases rapidly from 56% to 87%, and daily highs and lows are typically higher than average. The earliest sunrise and sunset in Colombo are in March and April, respectively, while the latest sunset is in May. Below, we have compiled a chart illustrating the average Colombo spring temperatures for each month and day.
Despite the high humidity and rainfall in the north and northeast, Colombo has only one or two dry days per month. Temperatures remain at about 30 degrees Celsius, with a high chance of thunderstorms in the hill country. During this time, Colombo still receives eight hours of sunshine per day. The humidity level is not uncomfortable, but it’s still higher than you’d find elsewhere in the island.
Trincomalee
In Trincomalee, Sri Lanka, the spring season has its own unique set of characteristics. As the name suggests, the springtime in Trincomalee is characterized by longer days and a longer time between sunrise and sunset. During this time, temperatures are pleasant and humidity levels are high, while rainfall amounts are low. In general, the weather in Trincomalee is quite pleasant throughout the year.
Spring weather in Trincomalee is usually warm with daytime highs reaching +86degF and nighttime lows near or below 81degF. The temperature range in Trincomalee varies throughout the month, but the average high temperature on May 27 is 86degF. The temperature is typically warmer than the average for the time of year. However, the daytime highs will be slightly cooler than the average.
Northeastern part of island
The Northeastern part of Sri Lanka has tropical weather, with maximum temperatures rarely dropping below 27degC (81degF). The prevailing wind blows from the interior, and the middays are often too hot and humid. It is best to avoid these areas during the afternoons and early mornings, when the temperature is still more comfortable for outdoor activities. In the southwest and Colombo, the spring and autumn weather is very similar, though the rainfall is considerably lighter than in the previous months.
While the southwest and central parts of the country enjoy dry weather, the north and northeast still experience rainy seasons. Even though rains are less severe than those in the southwest, afternoon downpours and night-long storms are common. Although rains are less frequent, they tend to last longer, resulting in a lot of rainfall. The southwest portion of the country is drier than the northeast.
Off-season
If you are planning to visit Sri Lanka during spring, you may want to consider coming to the island during the off-season. While the climate in the southern and eastern parts is still tropical and rainy, the west and eastern coasts experience relatively milder weather. You can also visit the country during the month of August, when the country experiences its largest gathering of Asian elephants. While you’re in the country, consider visiting one of the island’s many national parks during the off-season.
During the summer low season, temperatures in the island will generally be above 30 degrees Celsius. It’s best to pack accordingly and book accommodations that have air conditioning. While heavy rain can bring a dramatic reduction in temperatures in some areas, it’s also important to be prepared for the rain. While the island experiences hot weather throughout the year, it’s usually not enough to keep you from enjoying your vacation. It’s best to travel slowly during the off-season to avoid excessive heat.
Best time to visit
April is the hottest month in Sri Lanka. While it is a great time to visit the beaches, the central Hill Country can get quite hot. Despite this, the weather is still pleasant for a beach vacation, thanks to clear skies and long days. Tourists are advised to avoid the hottest hours of the day, though, since this is peak tourist season. April is also the month to see the famous elephant gathering in Minneriya National Park.
If you plan to travel during this time, you should try to avoid the mid-April New Year’s holiday. Spring weather is usually pleasant in Sri Lanka, and the island is popular with tourists. While May is a popular time to visit Sri Lanka, July and August are also popular months. Average temperatures throughout the country are around 25degC, but the hill country averages 19degC. This temperature is ideal for soaking up the sun and exploring the ancient temples and monasteries.
