What is a Start-Up Item?

Start-up items are programs that your Windows computer launches when you turn it on. These programs can be third-party applications you’ve installed or ones from Windows itself. If you don’t need a certain startup item, you can disable it through the GUI or the right-click menu. Third-party applications may also install system-wide Startup Items to run their background processes when you boot up your Mac. For example, antivirus software programs might run automatically during startup. Other third-party apps may run background processes to run as well. The Finder is a useful tool for identifying such applications and removing them from startup. If you want to remove a startup item completely, you need to access the Admin password. In older versions of OS X, the Admin password is required.

While you may not have noticed an issue with a particular startup item, you can still find out whether it is causing system-wide problems. If the Startup Item is not belonging to a third-party application, you can move it back to the Library > StartupItems folder. The problem may persist even after you uninstall the third-party application. Identifying the cause of the startup item may help you get a resolution and avoid the same issue.
