What You Should Know About Eel

Eel is a type of fish that lives in both saltwater and freshwater environments. The flavor is sweet and firm and resembles the taste of raw salmon, squid, or lobster. It has a high level of oiliness. Freshwater eels are more tender and have a lighter fishiness. The texture and flavor of saltwater eels vary. You should know what you are getting into before trying this delicious fish.

Anguilla anguilla

A. anguilla has a wide range of habitats. Its natural habitat includes inland waters of coastal regions of Europe and northern Africa, from Murmansk, near the Scandinavian Peninsula, to the Baltic Sea and the Atlantic coast of Morocco. It is also found in some coastal areas of the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Despite the wide range of habitats, it is not considered a threatened species.

Anguilla svensson

The Anguilla svensson is a curious creature, the only one of its kind in the world. Despite its name, the yellow eel is considered snake-like by humans. In a surprisingly short life span, these eels reach the end of their lives at a seemingly random age. Depending on how you measure the lifespan of an eel, it could be anywhere from eight months to seventy-two years. Scientists have not been able to explain this phenomenon and have only assumed that eels reproduce from larval eels. However, Svensson makes no such assumptions and seems content to let mystery remain.

Conger eels

Anglers should remember that conger eels are quite shy and are prone to hiding in small holes. If they find a hole, they must wait for a few minutes before trying to bite it again. Otherwise, congers will wedge themselves in and become impossible to remove. To catch them, you’ll have to pull on the line until the eel sucks the hook. In many cases, the decision on when to quit fishing is simply a matter of judgment.

Electric eels

Electric eels have three organs: a body, head and tail. The eels produce electric charges and use these to communicate, hunt and protect themselves. Their main electrical organ, referred to as the Hunter’s organ, produces the strongest electric pulses. Other organs, such as Sachs’ organ, produce weaker electric discharges. They live in murky pools and inland waters. In the wild, they prefer murky, still water.

Muraena eels

There are twelve species of muraena eels in the genus Muraena. The species of this family are common in the Mediterranean and are highly valued by the ancient Romans. Muraena eels are known for their smooth, brightly colored skin and lack of pectoral fins. The eels are also sometimes mistaken for snakes due to their bright colours and appearance.

Jellied eels

Originally associated with cockney London, jellied eels have now become a popular dish across the UK. A traditional English dish, jellied eels are boiled, chopped and spiced eels. Once cooked, the stewing liquid becomes a solid, and can be eaten hot or cold. This delicacy is most enjoyable with chilli vinegar, and was popular in the 18th century, when they were common fare for the working class in London.

Smoked eels

You can prepare smoked eels in two ways – you can either cut the eel in half or leave the head on. Halved eels are brined, but if you choose to keep the head on, you will need to remove the bloodline. A small teaspoon can do the job nicely. If you want a more authentic smoked eel, purchase a whole one. Be sure to buy a fresh eel with a high salt content, so you can taste the real flavor. You can serve smoked eels as a starter course or as a main course, depending on how you prepare them.
