When do you buy and sell stocks? The answer is New Year’s Day, Black Friday, Dec. 31, and New Year’s Eve. But when do you avoid these stock-market holidays? Here are some tips. But remember to use your judgment. There’s a reason why these days are considered to be high-risk and should be avoided at all costs. Read on to find out what your best bet is on each of these dates.
New Year’s Day
If you’re a regular stock market trader, you’re probably wondering if there will be a New Year’s Day stock holiday in 2022. While the markets will be closed on the first day of the new year, they’ll be open all other days. As a result, the market is less volatile, and you’ll have more time to make investment decisions. Thankfully, there won’t be a New Year’s Day stock holiday this year, but you should definitely plan ahead to take advantage of the market on Jan. 3.
Black Friday
If you want to know if Black Friday is a stock holiday, you’ve got to know who’s spending the most. While the southern region has been spending the most, the largest spending areas are California, Texas, and Connecticut. Men tend to spend more on Black Friday than women do, and they tend to buy different items than women do. Other regions with high spending habits include San Jose, Arizona, Hawai’i, and Connecticut. Age also plays a role. People between the ages of 50 and 65 spend more than those between 18 and 25.
New Year’s Eve
While New Year’s Eve is a traditional stock-market holiday, this year the market will not close on New Years Day. New Year’s Day is typically a Saturday, but the stock market will be open on both New Year’s Eve and New Years Day. As a result, traders will not be working on the holiday. The only exception will be the bond market, which will close early on Dec. 30.
Dec. 31
The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will be closed Friday, Dec. 24, as well as the following day, Dec. 31. The bond market will also close early. In the United States, New Year’s Day is observed on Saturday, with the stock markets remaining open on Sunday. In 2022, New Year’s Day will be on a Sunday, Dec. 23. The markets will be closed Monday, Jan. 3, 2022.
Jan. 1
The U.S. stock market is closed on certain days of the year. Each year, the stock market observes nine full-day holidays and two partial-day holidays. The tenth holiday will be Juneteenth, the National Independence Day. These are fixed dates each year, though the calendar day can vary slightly. In 2022, the stock market will be closed on Juneteenth. However, other dates are not set in stone.
Feb. 2
While stock markets generally close on Monday for Presidents Day, the U.S. stock market will be closed on Tuesday. The New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq, and other major financial markets will be closed as well. Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA) recommends that you not trade in dollar-denominated securities on Feb. 2. In addition to stocks, interest rates will be closely watched, as will money markets, certificates of deposit, and other financial instruments.
March 1
The domestic stock markets are scheduled to remain closed on two days in March this year: Holi and Mahashivratri. The stock market will be closed on March 1, 2022, and on March 18 in 2022. No trading will be conducted in the equity, currency, or derivative segments on these days. Trading will resume on March 2, 2022. In the interim, equity benchmarks made a smart recovery on Monday amid volatile trade. They finished higher before the release of official quarterly GDP data.
May 1
There are ten stock market holidays in a calendar year. All ten fall on Fridays, with the exception of one market holiday in 2022, when Juneteenth National Independence Day will be observed. The NYSE has closed on the Friday before the holiday in 2018, in honor of former president George H.W. Bush. Stocks in the Nordic stock markets are closed on various days of the year. Some of the holidays are observable by all stock exchanges, while others are less common.
Nov. 23
On Nov. 23, the Standard Exchange will be closed. The NYSE closes early to allow employees to enjoy the day off. Trading will resume on the following day. Banks and fund companies will be closed on these days. The NYSE will be open Monday through Friday, but it may close early. Transaction requests submitted prior to the NYSE’s close will still be processed. A day of trading is a significant holiday for stock market professionals.
Dec. 28
If you’re wondering about the December stock holiday, you’re not alone. Many markets will be closed for the holiday. In fact, many close early, with the NYSE and Nasdaq closing at 1:00 p.m. on the day after Thanksgiving. There will be no trading on December 25 and 26, and the NASDAQ will be closed on Christmas Eve.
